There are two markets in Papantla, both near the central plaza. Mercado Juárez is opposite the front door of the church. Mercado Hidalgo is 1 block downhill on the same street. The former has more food stalls, where you can order a bowl of zacahuil, a typical dish of the region. The latter has locally made baskets; vanilla extract; Xanath, a locally produced vanilla liqueur; and whole vanilla beans.
