American Express-- The representative is International Traders (tel. 06/560-7014) in the Shemaysani district, on Abdul Hamid Sharif Street, opposite the Ambassador Hotel. You can book tours here, and American Express cardholders can receive mail.

Banks-- The Arab Bank and the Housing Bank in the center of Wadi Musa, and the Cairo Amman Bank in the Mövenpick Hotel just outside the entrance to Petra all change money. They also give Visa cash advances. Banking hours are Saturday to Thursday 8:30am to 12:30pm. The Housing Bank has an ATM machine connected to Cirrus and Plus.

Embassies-- The U.S. Embassy (tel. 06/592-0101; fax 06/592-0102) is in Abdoun near the Fifth Circle; the Canadian Embassy (tel. 06/566-6124; fax 06/568-9227) is in Shemaysani, in the Philadelphia Bank Building Complex; the U.K. Embassy (tel. 06/592-3100; fax 06/592-3293) is also in Abdoun, near the Fifth Circle and the Orthodox Club; the Australian Embassy (tel. 06/593-0246) is near the Fourth Circle (in Jabal Amman, opposite the Embassy of Kuwait). The Israeli Embassy (tel. 06/552-5407) is at Rabia, near the Embassy of China; it is open Sunday to Thursday 8am to 4pm. Always call first to confirm the hours the desk for visas to Israel will be open.

Emergencies-- Throughout Jordan, for Police dial tel. 191 or 192; for an ambulance dial tel. 193.

Hospitals-- The Petra Emergency Clinic (tel. 03/215-6694), across the parking lot from the Petra Forum Hotel, is not a hospital, but it has an X-ray machine, an operating room, and other modern equipment. It is open daily 8am to 8pm. In an emergency, your hotel or the police (tel. 191) can help get you there.

Pharmacies-- The Wadi Musa Pharmacy (tel. 03/215-6444) is on the main traffic circle in Wadi Musa, and is open daily 24 hours. The Modern Petra Pharmacy, a block from the Wadi Musa Traffic Circle, has an English-speaking staff and carries tampons, condoms, and other items not normally stocked by local pharmacies.

Telephones-- The country code for Jordan is 962. The area code for Petra is 03.
