Hotel Il Chiostro di Pienza ReviewEven though this hotel in a 15th-century Franciscan convent faces no competition within Pienza's walls, the young staff still strives to maintain a high level of comfort with a keen attention to detail. The interior atmosphere -- frescoes on a few walls, the enlarging of old monks' cells to make larger rooms -- owes much to the building's 19th-century incarnation as a seminary, but most of the rooms feature modern touches like glass-topped tables and fabrics in bright colors. A few rooms in a wing of the hotel have a more antique charm, with simple peasant-style furniture made of old wood. The garden outside the breakfast room/restaurant (which offers fine Tuscan food) has sweeping views of the Val d'Orcia and tables for breakfast and bar service in summer. During the high season, light lunches are served under the arcades of the convent's cloister for those just passing through town. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
