Frommer's Review
In the heart of the historic district (look for the tipping tankard suspended over the sidewalk), New Hampshire's first brewpub opened in 1991 and still draws a loyal clientele with its superb beers. The tin-ceiling, brick-wall dining room is open, airy, echoey, and redolent of hops. Brews are made in 200-gallon batches and include specialties such as Old Brown Dog ale and a delightfully creamy Black Cat Stout. An eclectic menu complements these robust beverages. It includes the expected pizzas, burgers, and sandwiches (including a "steak bomb"), but also offers a changing rotating of some pretty adventurous selections such as tamarind grilled shrimp, crispy green tomatoes with Parmesan cheese, artichoke-stuffed ravioli, and cioppino. The food here is getting better every year; the beer is already excellent.

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
