Teddy's ReviewCanadian owned and operated, and permeated with a distinct sense of expatriate perceptions and values, this is the restaurant most likely to be visited by all-inclusive clients at the nearby Sun Village Resort. It's one of a chain of barbecue joints operated by Ontario-based Ted Reader, who GQ magazine described as "a crazy Canuck Barbecue kingpin" whose barbecue is virtually a household word north of the U.S. border. Part of the reason for this restaurant's popularity, other than its good barbecue, derives from a location directly astride Cofresi Playa, midway between Sun Village and its neighbor, Ocean World, within an easy beachfront walk from either. Another reason is based on ribs and deep-spiced meats that spend a full 12 hours in a smoker prior to being served as part of an urbanized, big-city version of what comes out of lesser smokehouses. In the words of its staff, "We provide an absolute taste of North America that's an attractive alternative to a week of all-inclusive buffets. Come and get sticky with us." Menu items include grilled grouper, wrapped in banana leaves, served with French-cut fries; "pork sliders" (three mini-sandwiches prepared with smoked pork and barbecue sauce); burgers and chicken club sandwiches; Teddy's lettuce-wrapped nachos; and an array of oversize salads. And then there are those "mamajuana smoked ribs" that anyone who's familiar with St. Louis-style barbecue will recognize as just a wee bit different from the original. (Coconut shells and scented, legally available herbs known locally as "mamajuana" are added to the wood chips.) Despite the availability of a rainbow of party-colored drinks, the libation of choice here is Presidente beer. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
