Frommer's Review
This is the most sophisticated, most intimate, and most socially prestigious hotel in the Dominican Republic, a relatively recent architectural gem that successfully functions as the crown jewel of a respected local hotel chain, VH. It was the first hotel in the country to join the Small Luxury Hotels of the World marketing group, and as an à la carte boutique hotel, it is distinctly and definitely never included within the roster of Puerto Plata's mass market all-inclusives. Baronial and aristocratic-looking, it evokes a combination of a Greek Orthodox church and a Palladian-style Renaissance villa, with hints of Andalusia and a definite sense of Spanish colonial chic. Its central core contains two deluxe restaurants, and its annex artfully combines lush gardens and a view of a primal-looking mangrove lagoon immediately adjacent to a stretch of highly desirable beachfront. The on-site full-service spa, the Bagua, reeks of haute California hip.
Bedrooms are all-white retreats that are high-ceilinged, large, and in some cases, very large. Other than the Presidential suite, the best accommodations are the lavish oceanfront master suites with private entrances. This is a very adult, and appealingly indulgent kind of place, where the presence of children under 12 is not encouraged.
