Frommer's Review
This is the most sophisticated, most intimate, and most socially prestigious hotel in the Dominican Republic. It was the first hotel in the country to join the Small Luxury Hotels of the World marketing group, and as an à la carte boutique hotel, it is distinctly and definitely never included within the roster of Puerto Plata's mass market all-inclusives. Baronial and aristocratic-looking, it evokes a combination of a Greek Orthodox church and a Palladian-style Renaissance villa, with hints of Andalusia and a definite sense of Spanish colonial chic. Its annex artfully combines lush gardens and a view of a primal-looking mangrove lagoon adjacent to a stretch of beachfront. Bedrooms are all-white retreats that are high-ceilinged, large, and in some cases, very large. The best accommodations are the lavish oceanfront master suites with private entrances. This is a very adult kind of place, where children under 12 are not encouraged.
Facilities:
2 restaurants; 3 bars; outdoor pool; golf privileges; health club; spa; room service; babysitting; laundry service; nonsmoking rooms; rooms for those w/limited mobility

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
