Cofresi Palm Beach Resort and Spa ReviewThe development of this Canadian-owned real-estate and hotel venture radically changed the touristic landscape of the region around Puerto Plata, and might have caused the owners of older, less desirable properties nearby to lose a lot of sleep. It's positioned 4km (2 1/2 miles) west of Puerto Plata's Malecón, on hilly, artfully landscaped terrain that ripples down to a desirable beach (Playa Cofresi). Its virtually self-contained and gleaming infrastructure seems very far indeed from the older order of hotels at Playa Dorada and Costa Dorada, on the opposite side of town. Adding to its allure is the sprawling Ocean World Marina and Casino complex, almost immediately next door, wherein dolphins, sea lions, and pretty girls in sequins are each, respectively, paraded out for razzmatazz and regularly scheduled showtimes. Although the two organizations are not associated with one another in any way, there's lots of traffic between the two, and each benefits, synergistically, from the allure and facilities of the other. The look here manages to combine Taíno with European motifs into a distinguished-looking whole. Some of the buildings are capped with three separate tiers of palm fronds in ways that, from the outside, evoke a Buddhist temple in Tibet. The venue is larger than you might at first have thought, replete with vast circular or octagonal public spaces that segue into other octagonal spaces that in some cases verge on the high-tech. Accommodations are carefully designed, airy, and comfortable, and thanks to their positions on sloping terrain, seem to be within an enormous garden that's intersected with pathways and roadways. If you don't feel like trekking, minivans make frequent runs up and down the hillside to and from the beach. There's a lot to recommend this combination real-estate-and-hotel development. Residential units are being aggressively marketed to investors throughout the U.S. and Canada. Facilities: Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
