The town's cultural center, Alte Mälzerei, Galgenberger Strasse 20 (tel. 0941/75738), hosts concerts and theater productions, as well as a run-down bar and beer garden that serves cheap drinks daily 2pm to 1am. The only late-night bar in town, Wunderbar, Keplerstrasse 11 (tel. 0941/53130; bus: Altstadtbus), serves drinks until 3am, 7 nights a week.
Historische Wurstküche, Thundorferstrasse 3 (tel. 0941/466210), celebrated its 852nd birthday in 2007, making it the oldest operating fast-food joint in all of Germany. It's still the best place in town for those delicious Regensburger sausages, which are cooked over beechwood fires in the small kitchen. A total of six of them, served with sauerkraut and fresh bread, costs 6.30€ ($8.20). The location is next to the Steinerne Brücke, and tables have a river view. At various times the river has risen to flood the joint. It is open April to October daily from 8am to 7pm, and from November to March, only Sunday 8am to 3pm.
At Scala, Gesandtenstrasse 6 (tel. 0941/52293; bus: Altstadtbus), three bars hem in the dance floor and attract an under-35 crowd. It's open Wednesday to Sunday 11pm to 3am (until 4am Fri-Sat). Admission is 3€ to 5€ ($3.90-$6.50).
If the weather's right when you reach Regensburg, head for the town's oldest inn, the Goldene Ente, Badstrasse 32 (tel. 0941/85455; bus: 12), which has a beer garden at the end of Eisernen Steg Brücke (along the Danube). Under the chestnut trees, you can sample spare ribs, Würstchen, grilled schnitzel, and, of course, that famous brew, Goldene Ente. It's open daily noon to 1am. Beer prices range from 3€ to 5€ ($3.90-$6.50).
A final bar option, one that evokes a venue far, far from Mitteleuropa, is Bar Cubano, Steinergasse 4 (tel. 01624/626305). Outfitted in the kind of intense colors you might expect in the Caribbean, it offers a roster of (you guessed it) Cuban cigars, spicy Caribbean food, framed blow-ups of Che Guevara set against mahogany paneling, and some of the best mojitos in town, priced at 5€ ($6.50). Some of the less inhibited clients might get up and dance as the evening progresses, but for the most part, the place defines itself as a cocktail bar with food. It's open nightly Tuesday to Thursday 8am to 1am, Friday and Saturday 8pm to 3am.
