Suggested Itineraries

If You Only Have 1 Or 2 Days

Although this is a park that simply begs for an extended visit -- 4 to 7 days would allow you the time to stop at viewpoints, see the exhibits, and hike at least a few trails -- it also has the advantage of offering a wonderful experience to visitors who have only a short time, or who are not able or willing to hike.

Those arriving in summer or early fall with only a day to see the park will want to stop at one of the visitor centers, and then drive the fantastically scenic Trail Ridge Road,. Stop at the viewpoints and take the half-hour walk along the Tundra World Nature Trail to get a close-up view of the plants, animals, and terrain of this rocky yet fragile world. Those returning to the east or west sides will have time for little else, since it takes about 3 hours each way for the 48-mile drive, but those passing through the park on their way to somewhere else may want to take another of the park's many hikes.

Having gotten a good overview of the grand scheme of Rocky Mountain National Park during your first day's drive on Trail Ridge Road, on your second day it's time for a close-up. If you're camping in the park or staying nearby, you may want to spend your first evening at one of the amphitheater programs presented by park rangers. For your second day, check out the schedule for guided hikes and other ranger-led activities, available at visitor centers and on campground bulletin boards, or make the drive to Bear Lake, taking time along the way for a look at the natural-history exhibits at the Moraine Park Museum and an easy walk around Sprague Lake. From the Bear Lake Trailhead, you can take a leisurely walk around Bear Lake; or, strike out on one of the moderately rated hiking trails, such as the trail to scenic Emerald Lake.

If You Have 3 Or More Days

On your third day, you could attempt a more strenuous hike, such as the East Inlet Trail to Lake Verna or Spirit Lake, on the west side of the park. Summer visitors looking for some less-physical adventures may prefer a drive up the steep, gravel Old Fall River Road, a trip that gives you a feel for the ruggedness of the park from the comfort of your car.

That afternoon a visit to the historic Holzwarth Trout Lodge Historic Site for a talk by a park ranger might be in order. If you're visiting in early fall, you'll want to take time in the late afternoon and early evening to drive to the various elk-viewing areas to see the bulls guarding their harems, and bugling their displeasure at any other bulls who approach.

Those fortunate enough to have additional time in the park can hike additional trails, take some overnight backcountry treks, or attempt to conquer Longs Peak, the park's tallest mountain.
