The Best Historic Sites

Holzwarth Trout Lodge Historic Site: This was rugged country in the early 20th century -- it still is, of course -- and conditions for tourists were primitive, to say the least. At this ranch, which has been preserved by the park service, you'll see kitchens, a taxidermy shop, and the primitive bunkhouses and other facilities that were rented out to early park visitors, and be grateful that things have changed.

Old Fall River Road: The national park's original dirt road is still in use and little changed from its opening in 1920. It gives today's motorists an idea of what it was like to drive into the park some 80 years ago.

Lulu City: Although there isn't a great deal to see here except some cabin ruins and rusty pieces of mining equipment, it can be fascinating to imagine what Lulu City was like more than 100 years ago, when this silver boomtown had a hotel, two sawmills, a variety of shops, and even a small red-light district.
