Frommer's Review
This popular hike offers everything a hike should -- trees, wildflowers, animals, a waterfall, a delightful lake, and a challenge that is rewarded by splendid views. The trail follows the East Longs Peak Trail for the first 3 miles, as you watch the trees get smaller and smaller until they disappear entirely at the tree line. After switchbacking up a moraine, you arrive at a trail junction, where you can go right to Longs Peak or left to Chasm Lake. Continuing toward the lake, you'll follow rock cairns in spots, with views of Longs Peak, before reaching Columbine Falls. Here you'll need to be especially careful as you follow a narrow ridge. After passing through a meadow of wildflowers, including Colorado blue columbine, and by a park service cabin, you'll climb to the top of another ridge until you finally arrive at Chasm Lake and its wonderful view of Longs Peak. The initial elevation is 9,300 feet, and the trail has a 2,390-foot elevation gain.
