This trail leads to a picturesque mountain lake, nestled in a valley among towering mountain peaks. The lake was named for Enos Mills, a naturalist who believed in protecting the wilderness for the refreshment of the soul, and who worked unceasingly for the establishment of Rocky Mountain National Park. Among the best spots in the park for photographing dramatic Longs Peak (the best lighting is usually in late afternoon or early evening), this is also the perfect place for a picnic. Morning, when the lake is still, is the best time to observe the reflections of shoreline rocks and trees in the water. The starting elevation is 9,245 feet, and the trail climbs only about 700 feet more.
