Frommer's Review
Head right around Bear Lake, following the trail toward Flattop Mountain , but at the second junction, take the right fork. From here the trail is relatively level, with gentle ups and downs for about 2 miles, until you find yourself at Odessa Gorge. Soon the trail turns northeast around Joe Mills Mountain, traversing the side of the gorge and providing views of Grace Falls on the opposite wall. Until mid-July you'll likely be crossing snowbanks and ice in this area, which can make the hike very treacherous. At the next junction, turn left (the right fork takes you to Fern Lake) and follow Fern Creek upstream to Odessa Lake. Notchtop Mountain and the Little Matterhorn rise majestically south of the lake. The beginning elevation is 9,480 feet and you'll gain 1,205 feet in elevation when you head to Odessa Lake. If you want a longer hike, return to the junction and head left toward Fern Lake (elevation drop of 1,150 ft.), then continue down to Moraine Park (elevation drop of 1,450 ft.), for a total hike of 9.6 miles. Take the Bear Lake Shuttle to get back to your car.
