Frommer's Review
From the trail head there's about a mile's climb through forests of aspen, lodgepole pine, fir, and spruce to a bridge across Onahu Creek. Watch for wild berries as you hike -- blueberries, strawberries, and occasionally huckleberries can be found here. A little over 2 miles from the trail head, the path follows the creek a bit, where mossy rocks, boulders, and several bridges provide attractive areas for picnicking. The last bridge over Onahu Creek is just short of 3 miles from the trail head, and once across, you'll approach the junction with Timber Creek Trail. Turn right (south), and you will climb somewhat steeply for about .5 miles before entering a forest of lodgepole pine so dense that it limits visibility. Shortly after the Tonahutu Trail joins from the east, you'll enter Big Meadows and hike along its western edge for about .5 miles. Big Meadows contains the remnants of Sam Stone's ranching efforts of the early 1900s, alongside wildflowers such as red elephant heads. From here, head west on Green Mountain Trail to Trail Ridge Road. It's only a short walk north from that point to get back to where you started. The initial elevation is 8,798 feet, and the elevation gain is 858 feet.
