Summer is the time for most of Safed's musical events. About eight chamber music concerts are held throughout the year, mostly in the summer, as well as a summer musical workshop. The Klezmer Festival of East European Jewish Music is the highlight of the summer programs. Check with the tourist office for the weekly scene. For piano concerts, check out Hemdat Yamim (tel. 04/698-9085) on the Acre-Safed highway, which usually has concerts every Monday and Saturday evening during the summer.
The Yigal Alon Cultural Center and Theatre on Jerusalem Street (tel. 04/697-1990) has everything from Shakespeare to ballet and popular folk dancing. It's named for the man who led the forces that liberated Safed in the 1948 war.
