Planning a Trip

Getting There

Saint John is located on Route 1. It's 106km (66 miles) from the U.S. border at St. Stephens and 427km (265 miles) from Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Year-round ferry service connects Saint John to Digby, Nova Scotia. Saint John's airport, coded YSJ (tel. 506/696-0200; www.saintjohnairport.com), has regular flights to and from Montréal, Toronto, and Halifax on Air Canada Jazz (tel. 888/AIR-CANA; www.flyjazz.ca). WestJet (tel. 800/538-5696; www.westjet.com) also runs occasional service from Toronto. There are auto-rental kiosks in the terminal, and a taxi ride into the city costs about C$30 (US$27/£15).

Visitor Information

Saint John (www.tourismsaintjohn.com) is fully stocked with three (count'em) visitor information centers. Arriving from the west, look for a contemporary triangular building near the Route 1 off-ramp, open mid-May to early October, where you'll find a trove of information and brochures (tel. 506/658-2940). A smaller seasonal information center, off exits 119A and 119B of Route 1, is located inside the observation building overlooking Reversing Falls on Route 100 (tel. 506/658-2937). It's also open mid-May to early October.

If you've already made your way downtown, or need info outside of the peak seasons, look for the city's City Centre Tourist Information Centre (tel. 886/GO-FUNDY or 506/658-2855) inside Market Square, a downtown shopping mall just off the waterfront reached via Exit 122 off Route 1. Find the info center by entering the square at street level at the corner of St. Patrick and Water streets. During peak season (mid-June to mid-Sept) the center is open daily from 9am to 7pm. The rest of the year it's open daily 9am to 5:30pm.
