American Express-- The American Express office is located north of Salt Lake City in Bountiful at 150 N. Main St. (tel. 801/292-8687). It's open Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Business Hours-- Banks are usually open Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm, often until 6pm on Friday; some have hours on Saturday. Small stores are usually open Monday through Saturday, with some also open on Sunday afternoon. Most department stores, discount stores, and supermarkets are open daily and until 9pm. Some supermarkets are open 24 hours a day.

Doctors-- For physician referrals, contact the Utah Medical Association (tel. 801/355-7477). In an emergency, dial tel. 911.

Emergencies-- Dial tel. 911 for police, fire, or ambulance.

Hospitals-- LDS Hospital, 8th Avenue and C Street (tel. 801/408-1100), and Salt Lake Regional Medical Center, 1050 E. South Temple (tel. 801/350-4111), both have 24-hour emergency rooms.

Newspapers & Magazines-- The two major daily newspapers are the Salt Lake Tribune (www.sltrib.com) and the Deseret Morning News (www.deseretnews.com). The Salt Lake City Magazine is a slick publication with a section on current events. The Salt Lake City Weekly (www.slweekly.com) is the local alternative paper.

Police-- For emergencies, call tel. 911. The nonemergency police phone number is tel. 801/799-3000.

Post Office-- The main post office is at 1760 W. 2100 South; the branch closest to downtown is at 230 W. 200 South (tel. 800/275-8777; www.usps.com for hours and locations of other post offices).

Road & Traffic Conditions -- For road conditions, callers within Utah can now reach the Travel Information Line by dialing 511. For callers outside the State, the number is 866/511-UTAH (866/511-8824). Information can also be found online at: http://commuterlink.utah.gov.

Taxes-- Sales tax in Salt Lake City is 6.6%; restaurant tax totals 7.6%; lodging taxes total 11.2% within the city limits, 10.1% to 11.1% in Salt Lake County outside the municipal boundaries.
