Frommer's Review
An old sugar mill, the Solar consists of a number of beautifully preserved heritage buildings centered around a lovely stone courtyard that dates back to the 18th century. Half the fun is just to wander around and explore the various buildings set on the waterfront (the views are fabulous). The main building houses a small modern art museum; you'll find some works of Portinari and Di Cavalcanti among the works on display. Taking the path to the right of the main building will lead you above the rocks to the sculpture garden with works by Caribé and Mario Cravo. The rest of the very small collection is housed in a side building behind the sculpture garden. Expect to spend 1 to 2 hours.
Tip: There's a nightly dinner and folklore show in the Solar's restaurant. Yes, it's touristy, but the food is good and the dancers top quality. Shows start Monday through Saturday at 8:30pm and cost R$76 (US$32).
