Review of Salzburg Museum/Neue ResidenzA series of attractions are sheltered in the "New Residence" complex, which isn't new at all. It actually dates from the 1600s, when it was Prince-Archbishop Wolf-Dietrich's "overflow palace." The main part of the new Residence is a series of state reception rooms that marked the beginning of the Renaissance in Salzburg. One of the highlights of the museum is the exhibitions once housed in the Museum Carolino Augusteum. Rare archaeological treasures are found here, including Hallstatt Age relics, plus fragments of ruins from the town's Roman occupation. A Celtic bronze flagon is one of the chief treasures. The museum is noted for its collection of Old Masters, with a rich trove of Gothic panel paintings and much art work from the Romantic period. The Gothic altarpieces show fine craftsmanship, and you may want to seek out works by Hans Makart, an artist born in Salzburg in 1840. In the basement of the Neue Residenz is the Kunsthalle, a multifunctional circular hall where special exhibitions are staged every year, many devoted to artists who had a special relationship with Salzburg. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
