Die Weisse Review

This is one of the best restaurant-cum-breweries in Salzburg. It's old-fashioned and traditional, serving food that went over big in 1890. Carry a big appetite if you dine here, as portions are huge. Instead of butter, cold lard and cracklings are spread over dark rye bread. This is followed with the biggest Wiener schnitzel we've ever encountered in Salzburg. The platter is accompanied by a freshly made salad, potatoes, and cranberry sauce for added flavor. Other rib-sticking fare includes a platter of mixed sausages and perfectly roasted ham. Dumplings accompany main dishes. Some diehard Austrian diners make a meal out of the dumplings themselves, especially the small Pinzgauer cheese dumplings, which come in their own sauté pan, bubbling with a very tangy cheese. Naturally there's plenty of beer to wash everything down, along with a bakery full of pretzels and freshly baked breads. For dessert, finish off with an apfelstrudel.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
