Extraordinary Desserts ReviewChef and proprietor Karen Krasne's talent surpasses the promise of her impressive pedigree, which includes a Certificat de Patisserie from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. Dozens of divine creations are available daily at this architecturally striking space, including a passion fruit ricotta torte bursting with kiwis, strawberries, and bananas, or a gianduia of chocolate cake lathered with hazelnut butter cream, chocolate mousse, boysenberry preserves, and sprinkled with shards of praline. The menu also includes panini, salads, and artisan cheeses, as well as organic wines, boutique beers, and more than 50 different loose-leaf teas; a light breakfast featuring pastries, granola, and smoked salmon is offered Sundays from 11am to 2pm ($17). Krasne also sells her own line of jams, chutneys, syrups, spices, and confections. The original location in Hillcrest, 2929 Fifth Ave. (tel. 619/294-2132), is more cozy and intimate but serves only desserts and does not have alcohol.
