Made even better following a major renovation in 2010, this place has much going for it: up-to-date amenities, remarkable value, a central location in the heart of Little Italy, a friendly staff, and free parking (a rare perk in San Diego). The four-story structure, erected in 1926 then modernized in 1991 by one of the city's most acclaimed architects, is built around a courtyard and feels like a small European hotel. The moderately sized but comfortable rooms offer contemporary design, private bathrooms, and some have killer views; ask for room 422, which has floor-to-ceiling windows, or room 320, which has its own balcony. La Pensione is within walking distance of eateries (two restaurants are directly downstairs), nightspots, and a trolley station. Noise-sensitive travelers should note this is a very active neighborhood where the cafes stay busy until midnight on weekends and trains rumble by a block away.
