Insiders looking for unusual accommodations head for this small inn at the northern edge of Balboa Park. This cluster of four Spanish Colonial-style former apartment buildings lies in a mostly residential neighborhood a half-mile east from the heart of Hillcrest; the hotel has long been popular with gay travelers drawn to the area's restaurants and clubs. All the rooms and standard suites are themed (and nonsmoking), some evoking Victorian or Art Deco sensibilities, others reaching for a more elaborate fantasy, such as the "Orient Express" room with its red hues and Chinese wedding bed. Seven of the rooms have Jacuzzi tubs, and most have kitchens -- all have private entrances, though the front desk operates 24 hours. From here, you can walk to the San Diego Zoo and other Balboa Park attractions.
