Hotel del Coronado Review
Opened in 1888 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977, the "Hotel Del" is the last of California's stately old seaside hotels. This monument to Victorian grandeur boasts tall cupolas, red turrets, and gingerbread trim, all spread out over 28 acres. Even if you don't stay here, be sure to stroll through the sumptuous, wood-paneled lobby and along the pristine, wide beach. Rooms run the gamut from compact to extravagant, and all are packed with antique charm. The least expensive rooms are snug and don't have views; the best are junior suites with large windows and balconies fronting one of the state's finest white-sand beaches. Almost half the hotel's rooms are in the renovated, seven-story tower -- it has more living space, but none of the historical ambience. The Del's signature restaurant, the distinctive and contemporary 1500 Ocean, serves a sophisticated "Southland Coastal" cuisine; and don't miss the Sunday brunch in the amazing Crown Room. Recent additions to the Del include a state-of-the-art spa and Beach Village, a collection of 78 "coastal cottages." These privately owned two- and three-bedroom condos feature fireplaces and oceanview balconies, and are available for rental. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
