The Lodge at Torrey Pines Review

Ten minutes north of La Jolla proper, you'll find this triumphant Craftsman-style creation at the edge of the Torrey Pines Golf Course. The only AAA 5-diamond property within the San Diego city limits, the Lodge brims with clinker-brick masonry (a style of building using darker or oddly shaped bricks in a wall), art glass windows and doors, and Stickley furniture. Even the least expensive rooms are an unstinting 520 square feet and lavished with Tiffany-style lamps, period wallpaper, framed Hiroshige prints, and lots of wood accents; views face a courtyard carefully landscaped to mimic the rare seaside environment just beyond the hotel grounds. More expensive rooms overlook the golf course and the ocean in the distance; most of these have balconies, fireplaces, and giant bathrooms. The 9,500-square-foot spa specializes in treatments utilizing coastal sage and other local plants, and there's an elegant pool area with an elevated Jacuzzi sheltered under a gazebo. An excellent restaurant named after painter A. R. Valentien features top-quality seasonal offerings.

Facilities:
2 restaurants; bar; concierge; exercise room; preferential tee times at the golf course; Jacuzzi; outdoor pool; room service; spa

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
