Frommer's Review
If you don't feel like dropping huge dollars at one of La Jolla's signature hotels but still want some glitz, this property is a nice compromise. It's not in the village, but it is walking distance to the restaurants and the beach at La Jolla Shores. (The hotel also offers a complimentary shuttle to both the village and the Shores.) This 11-story hotel has 108 rooms, some with balconies; if you want a room with an ocean view, try to get something above the fourth floor. The top floor is occupied by Clay's La Jolla, a pricey restaurant and lounge that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and offers spectacular views and live jazz. Although the hotel rates tend to be a deal in comparison with other nearby properties, they may not stay that way. Graham Downes, one of the city's top architects (who also did interior design on the Hard Rock Hotel), was hired to spruce up the hotel, refresh the rooms, and add a lap pool and a sushi bar. The work was expected to be completed by summer 2007.
