Few of San Gimignano's restaurants are outstanding, but its white wine certainly is. Vernaccia di San Gimignano, probably the best white in Tuscany, is a slightly peppery, dry wine old enough to have been cited in Dante's Divine Comedy.

Bar I Combattenti, Via San Giovanni 124 (tel. 0577-940-391), has been serving coffee since 1924 just inside the gates of town. Try their creamy gelato: the award-winning ricciarello di Siena made with the Sienese cookies, or even a local saffron-tinged flavor.
