Frommer's Review
The lovely pink-and-white Art Deco Marian Palace was built by a Polish princess in 1942 and was one of São Paulo's first high-rise apartments. Converted into a hotel in 1950, the original Art Deco character has been exquisitely preserved. Rooms are spacious (except the single rooms, which should be avoided) with large closets; some have carpet, others have beautiful hardwood floors. The building's sweeping curves lead to lots of room configurations. Rooms ending in "2" (nos. 202, 302) have oval windows and a terrace with lovely views; rooms ending in "3" (nos. 203, 303) have curvy wrought-iron doors leading onto a sinuous balcony. The standard rooms on the other side of the building lack these extras. All rooms, however, are nicely furnished and retain original Art Deco features such as the lamps, the chairs, and even the color schemes. The bathrooms are done in colorful blue-and-yellow tiles; a few have bathtubs. The hotel's swimming pool has a great sun deck at eye level with the steeple of the Santa Ifigênia church. Note that the Marian is not for everyone. Where some see antique and funky, others may see just old.
