In One Week

It is possible to see the best of Singapore and Malaysia in a short amount of time if you plan well. Two days in Singapore is just enough to see the major sights. I've suggested Penang and Langkawi in Malaysia because Penang has the best historical sights and Langkawi has the best beach resorts, so you can get in a little culture, plus downtime. However, as you plan your trip be advised that flights from Singapore can also take you directly to Borneo as well as other areas in peninsular Malaysia, so you can substitute other destinations that suit your interests.

Days 1 & 2: Arrive in Singapore

After arriving in Singapore, allow yourself time to recover and just spend your time wandering through the city's streets. My suggested itinerary for "The Best of Singapore in 1 Day," earlier in this chapter, is a good place to start. You will explore Arab Street and Chinatown with stops inside cultural exhibits to escape the weather.

Day 3: Singapore

For your second day, "The Best of Singapore in 2 Days," earlier in this chapter, will steer you through Little India and to the lovely Asian Civilisations Museum.

Day 4: Penang

Take an early-morning flight to Penang. After checking into your hotel, visit the Penang Museum and Art Gallery, where you'll get a brilliant overview of the island's history and cultures.

Day 5: Georgetown

Here's what I have to say about Georgetown: Don't plan your time too closely. Start off at the Penang Museum and Art Gallery, where you'll get a brilliant overview of the island's history and cultures, then just spend your time walking through the streets. Attractions are all situated within walking distance, but don't rush: Take time to peek in the shop doors and snack on the local treats you'll find along the way. Just make sure you're at the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, in time for the 11am or 3pm tour -- consider it a must! Afterward, mosey over to the E&O Hotel for either lunch or high tea in the old colonial dame.

Day 6: Langkawi

Hop the early-morning ferry to Langkawi and arrive in time for lunch and a little R & R at your resort. Book scuba, snorkel, or watersports activities for the next day if you haven't done so already.

Day 7: Langkawi

Spend a day unwinding in tropical island paradise. No sense going home without some good downtime. I suggest after soaking in sun and sea all day, book yourself a late-afternoon/early-evening spa visit for the icing on the relaxation cake.

Days 8 & 9: Back to KL
