Frommer's Review
Katong, the central neighborhood of the Peranakan, or Straits Chinese, community, is also famous for excellent local cuisine. True Blue, housed in a restored prewar shophouse in this historic neighborhood, shares a block with other Peranakan heritage sites, like Rumah Bebe, a shop for Peranakan fashions. Inside, the restaurant is decorated with cultural trappings that will make Singaporeans nostalgic and foreigners feel as if they've been welcomed into a private home. Home-cooked from family recipes (the owner's mother runs the kitchen), luscious favorites such as ayam buah keluak, which is a dish of chicken- and mincemeat-stuffed nuts in a sourish curry, is some if the best I've tasted. The friendly staff will help you navigate other classics on the menu, like otak-otak, pounded fish and chili grilled in banana leaves, and beef rendang, beef stewed in a thick, mildly spicy coconut gravy. Tell your taxi driver to take you to East Coast Road at the junction with Joo Chiat Road. You can follow the shop numbers a short walk until you find the place. Taxis back to town are plentiful.
