Frommer's Review
The Strand is by far one of the best of the backpacker places in Singapore. The lobby doesn't look or feel like a budget hotel, with marble floors, a smart bellhop, and a long reception desk. There's also an inviting cafe to one side, plus a small gift shop. Guest rooms are the largest I've seen in a budget hotel in Singapore, in fact larger than a lot of more expensive rooms as well. They're pretty funky, too, with bright-colored painted walls to offset very simple wooden furnishings. Whatever you do, don't go for the "special room," with the bathtub/shower separated from the main room by only a thin glass wall. Anybody for a free show?
Facilities:
Restaurant; 24-hr. room service; same-day laundry service

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
