A fantastic bargain for leisure travelers in Singapore, Traders advertises itself as a "value-for-money" hotel. A spinoff of Shangri-La, this hotel anticipates the special needs of travelers and tries on all levels to accommodate them. Rooms have an empty fridge that can be stocked from the supermarket next door (show your room card key at nearby Tanglin Mall for discounts from many of the shops); there are spanking-clean self-service launderette facilities with ironing boards on six floors; and there are vending machines and ice machines (a rarity in Asian hotels). They even provide a hospitality lounge for guests to use after checkout, with seating areas, work spaces with dataports, card phones, safe-deposit boxes, vending machines, and a shower. Guest rooms are smaller than average but feature child-size sofa beds and large drawers for storage. The large, landscaped pool area has a great poolside alfresco cafe, Ah Hoi's Kitchen, serving up tasty local dishes at reasonable prices. Be sure to ask about promotion rates when you book your room. If you're planning to stay longer than 2 weeks, they have a long-stay program that offers discount meals, laundry and business center services, and half-price launderette tokens.
One caveat: The distance from MRT service and Orchard Road makes you dependent on taxi service. However, I like Trader's option to cross-sign (at no extra charge) with its two sister properties, the Shangri-La Hotel, which is only a 5-minute taxi ride away, and the Shangri-La's Rasa Sentosa Resort on Sentosa Island, giving you access to their awesome pools, spas, and fitness centers plus the latter's beachfront access.
