Peninsula * Excelsior Hotel

As its rather uninspiring name suggests, this huge hotel was created when two of the city's busiest tourist-class hotels merged, combining their lobby and pools and other facilities into one giant value-for-money property popular with tour groups. The location really is excellent, in the Historic District within walking distance to Chinatown and Boat Quay, with some fantastic views over the city, the Singapore River, and the marina. A long-overdue renovation has been completed, bringing rooms up-to-date, some with huge wood headboards and lounges built into cozy bay windows, but most with very plain but tidy standard furnishings. My one problem with this hotel is the pool, which is small and separated only by glass from the hotel lobby, which makes for a very self-conscious swim. This remains a very popular hotel for large tour groups.
