Hotel Bencoolen ReviewBencoolen is the signature backpacker hotel on a block that's best known for budget accommodations. A tiny lobby has a reception desk, bellhop, and one computer for Internet access. Upstairs the rooms are equally small, with barely room to move around a queen-size bed, only a narrow closet for clothes, and a tiny TV hanging from the ceiling. King-size rooms have space for a small desk, while family rooms have one queen and one slightly oversize single bed squeezed in. Decor is stark. Small bathrooms are newly tiled as well but are already beginning to show some age. Don't expect views or creature comforts -- the Bencoolen is a good, clean place to sleep before hitting the city again. The hotel has a rooftop restaurant. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
