Frommer's Review
A Chinatown landmark, the old 1928 Art Deco Majestic building is now a swank hotel, and Singapore's hottest spot for culture vultures. The concept -- each guest room is individually designed by an emerging Singaporean artist. With wood floors, mosaic tiled bathrooms with claw-foot cast iron tubs, lots of glass, and contemporary fittings, these small rooms come alive with murals and artworks that say a little something about Singapore and the local arts scene. Themed rooms include garden rooms with wooden decks and outside tubs, hanging bed rooms, loft bed rooms, a mirror room, and an aquarium room. The devil is in the details: Top-of-the-line bedding, toiletries by Kiehl's, Bose systems, and Wi-Fi throughout add real value. The lobby is special as well, in stark white, with polished terrazzo floors, a spiral staircase and the owner's collection of vintage design-icon chairs. The rooftop lap pool is small, in contrasting black-and-white tiles, and the hotel's Chinese restaurant is as chic and quirky as the rest of the place.
