The 38-mile, approximately 3-hour rail excursion travels from Redmond to Prineville and back. Restored dining cars are the setting for dinners that may feature a murder-mystery theme. Fans of folk art should be sure to stop by the Petersen Rock Gardens & Museum, 7930 SW 77th St., Redmond (tel. 541/382-5574), 9 miles north of Bend just off U.S. 97. This 4-acre folk-art creation consists of buildings, miniature bridges, terraces, and tiny towers all constructed from rocks. The gardens, built between 1935 and 1952 by a Danish immigrant farmer, are open daily from 9am to 5pm. Admission is $4.50 for adults, $3 for seniors, $2 for children 12 to 16, and $1 for children 6 to 11. If, after a hard day of playing in the outdoors, you need a massage (or a facial or detox wrap), make a reservation at Shibui, 720 Buckaroo Trail (tel. 541/549-6164; www.shibuispa.com), a beautiful Asian-inspired day spa affiliated with the luxurious FivePine Lodge & Conference Center.
