Sitka Hotel

An old building facing the parade ground right downtown contains some large, attractive rooms with large TVs and good beds for bargain rates. But the hotel is a budget choice and has its rough edges, including noisy heat and thin walls -- not for the light sleeper -- and casual service. The rooms vary, with those in the older section at the front relatively small and creaky, and the newer rooms, in the back of the building, larger and with added amenities, such as coffeemakers. Overall, it's a good place to save money and has always been clean on our many visits.

Victoria's Restaurant, with about a dozen tables in the storefront downstairs, tries for a high Victorian feel, but in actuality, it's more of a friendly small-town diner, with hearty breakfasts and lunches in winter and an inexpensive fine-dining dinner menu added in the summer. The hotel has a small bar, too.
