Shee Atika Totem Square Inn

This is the best large hotel in town. Owned by the local Native corporation and standing across the street from the community house, it makes full use of their Tlingits motifs and colors in its decoration -- red, black, white, and earth -- and employs many Natives on its staff. The service was uniformly excellent on both our recent visits, and the housekeeping spotless. The building makes use of the ocean view in two directions, and the rooms are well thought out and nicely equipped, with comfortable beds and large flatscreen TVs. Continuous upgrading for several years has kept it all like new. Common rooms include a light, spacious breakfast room, where a generous continental breakfast is served; fast, free computer terminals in the lobby; and snacks for guests available at all hours. A dock for tour and fishing charter boats is attached. The downtown location allows walking to some of the attractions, although the national historic site is a long walk.
