The museum contains a fine collection of gold-rush artifacts and other items reflecting Skagway's colorful history. The building is the town's most impressive and one of the state's most dignified architectural landmarks, with crisp granite walls and a high-pitched roof standing among tall shade trees on the edge of town. It began life as a short-lived gold rush-era college and later became a federal courthouse and jail. The city hall and museum have occupied the building since 1961 except for a brief hiatus for renovations.
