Hotels

Accommodations are tight during the Spoleto Festival (reserve by Mar), so here are a few places to try in addition to the choices below if you have trouble finding a room. The Hotel dei Duchi, Viale G. Matteotti 4 (tel. 0743-44-541; fax 0743-44-543; www.hoteldeiduchi.com), has 49 bland rooms in a bland 1959 brick building just south of Piazza Libertà. All the amenities are offered, but the rooms are showing their years, and at 100€ to 150€ ($130-$195) per double, they really should be renovated. Rates go even higher during the Spoleto Festival.

Cheaper and simpler, but for my money more pleasant, are the seven spacious doubles above the restaurant (now under separate ownership) Il Panciolle, Via del Duomo 3-7 (tel./fax 0743-45-677). They have tile floors, soft beds, relatively new bathrooms, TVs, phones, and minibars, and cost 55€ ($72).
