Enoteca Provinciale Review

This wine-store-cum-osteria replaces the livestock stalls of a medieval tower with a handful of wooden tables and a radio locked on the Italian pop station. Some regulars drop by just for a sandwich; others swill the day away with dozens of Umbrian wines. Strengozzi is handmade spaghetti served alla Spoletina (with spicy-hot tomato sauce), al tartufo, or in a game-based ragù. The standout soup is zuppa di farro (with crushed baby grains enlivened by veggies and meat). The secondi suit all appetites: simple panini, delicately flavored frittata al tartufo (an omelet for the indulgent in all of us), and daily specials such as wild boar cooked in Sagrantino red wine and truffled agnello (mutton). Order your wine by the glass so that you can sample a cross section of the best Umbria has to offer, and finish with the local bitter liqueur amaro di tartufo.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
