Stonewall Jackson Hotel & Conference Center

Next door to the Blackfriars Playhouse, this classic downtown hotel first opened in 1924 and served as Staunton's special-occasions center until the 1960s, when it fell on hard times and was turned into an assisted-living facility. Thanks to a recent $21-million restoration, it's back in business as the town's prime commercial hotel and conference center. Be sure to walk up on the mezzanine and check out the 1924 Wurlitzer piano-organ. It overlooks the bright lobby whose walls showcase some of the hotel's original silverware, dishes, and other 1920s mementos. The main dining room off the lobby provides breakfast daily, while the lobby lounge serves dinner. Rooms in the original building were expanded and updated but are still a tad smaller than those in a new wing added during the restoration. They all have antique-look furniture, writing desks, two phones, and bathrooms with ample granite vanities. There's an indoor pool here.
