Frommer's Review
Greta Garbo checked out long ago, but this legendary hotel still occupies the most spectacular site on St. Barts, flanked by two perfect beaches. Years ago, when the island's former mayor, Remy de Haenen, bought the quartzite promontory this hotel sits on from an old woman, she laughed at him for paying too much. Today, the story is part of island lore. Offering the best panoramas on the island, it's surrounded on three sides by the waters of St. Jean Bay.
The building atop the pinnacle looks like an idealized version of a Provençal farmhouse. The stone house contains a collection of French antiques and paintings left over from the de Haenen family, plus English antiques and paintings. The decor in each guest room includes a stylish mixture of tasteful antiques and reproductions; the fabrics and accessories are pulled together with flair. Some rooms are right on the beach, with their own access to the sand. The best and most expensive are the ocean suites with private balconies. The least expensive are the small and cozy cabins. Bathrooms are compact and most have only showers. Named in honor of former guest Howard Hughes, a rooftop loft suite opened in 2005 with verandas on three sides and a panoramic view of St. Jean Bay. In addition, Eden Rock took over a neighboring beachfront resort, redoing all the bedrooms and increasing its room count. The new units include eight suites with decks opening onto the beach as well as five beachfront rooms. Five of the new suites have outdoor Jacuzzis, and two units come with private pools.
There's great emphasis on the quality and elegance of the cuisine at Eden Rock's three restaurants. There's a casual beachfront bar for lunch. Dinner is served at On-The-Rocks Restaurant -- a stylish and swanky French joint -- as well as at the Sand Bar.
