Frommer's Review

This large, luxurious, family-owned resort boasts three of the island's best beaches, and the best sports program on St. Croix. The property was once a cattle ranch and a sugar plantation; its first estate house, which dates from the mid-17th century, stands near a freshwater pool. The Buccaneer is the sole representative of the Virgin Islands on the list of Historic Hotels of America. Accommodations are either in the main building or in one of the beachside properties. The arched main building has a lobby opening onto landscaped terraces, with a sea vista on two sides and Christiansted to the west. The rooms are fresh and comfortable, though some of the standard units are a bit small. Each room has a balcony or terrace. The best bathrooms are in the Beachside Doubloons, and come complete with whirlpool tubs. A free Kid's Camp is available year-round and scuba lessons are free. There is also a challenging golf course and first-class tennis facilities on-site.

This resort serves the best cuisine of any hotel on the island -- a Caribbean and international repertoire of first-class dishes. The Terrace is probably the finest hotel dining room on all of St. Croix. The Terrace Lounge, adjacent to the restaurant, is also one of the few nightlife spots in all of St. Croix, with live entertainment every night.

Facilities:
4 restaurants; bar; 2 pools; golf course; 8 tennis courts (2 lit); fitness center; spa; watersports equipment rentals; children's program; room service; babysitting; laundry service, nonsmoking rooms; rooms for those w/limited mobility

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
