This is the hotel of choice for many celebrities visiting Stockholm. That can be either good or bad for you. When Axl Rose, from the rock group Guns N' Roses, stayed here in 2006, he bit one of the doormen -- and the hotel was then mentioned in tabloids around the world. But, chances are, you won't get to witness something as exciting as that. When not hosting rock stars, the Berns can actually be rather subdued.

During its 19th-century heyday, beginning in 1863, this was the most elegant hotel in Sweden, with an ornate Gilded Age interior that was the setting for many a legendary rendezvous. In 1989, following years of neglect, it was rebuilt in the original style, and the restaurant facilities were upgraded. Although the dining and drinking areas are usually crowded with sometimes-raucous club kids and bar patrons, the guest rooms are soundproof and comfortably isolated from the activity downstairs. The Red Room is the setting and namesake of Strindberg's novel Röda Rummet.
