Hotels in Stockholm
By the standards of many U.S. or Canadian cities, hotels in Stockholm are very expensive. If the high prices make you want to cancel your trip, read on. Dozens of hotels in Stockholm offer reduced rates on weekends all year, and daily from around mid-June to mid-August. For further information, inquire at a travel agency or the tourist center. In summer, it's best to make reservations in advance, just to be on the safe side.
Most of the city's medium-priced hotels are in Norrmalm, north of the Old Town, and many of the least-expensive lodgings are near the Central Station. There are comparably priced inexpensive accommodations within 10 to 20 minutes of the city, easily reached by subway, streetcar, or bus. We'll suggest a few hotels in the Old Town, but these choices are limited and more expensive.
Note: In most cases, a service charge ranging from 10% to 15% is added to the bill, plus the inevitable 21% MOMS (value-added tax). Unless otherwise indicated, all of our recommended accommodations come with a private bathroom.
Booking Services -- Hotell Centralen, Vasagatan (tel. 08/508-285-08; www.stockholmtown.com), on the street level of the Central Station, is the city's official housing bureau; it can arrange accommodations in hotels, pensions (boarding houses), and youth hostels -- but not in private homes. There is no booking fee. It's open Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm, and Sunday 10am to 4pm.
Inexpensive -- Inexpensive is a relative term when applied to Stockholm hotels. What might be considered inexpensive in Stockholm would be superpricey in western Kansas.
Family-Friendly Hotels
Scandic Sergel Plaza -- At "Siggie's Castle," kids can play with toy cars, construct brick buildings, watch videos, and even read books.
Hotel Tegnérlunden -- Twenty big, airy rooms are ideal for families on a budget.
Sheraton Stockholm Hotel & Towers -- This well-run chain has always pampered children. The spacious rooms are comfortably shared with parents.

City Backpackers Hostel
Scandinavian hostels look better than many hotels do in other parts of the world, and this one is no exception. Guestrooms have shiny wood floors, solid unswaying bunkbeds with good matresses, and pieces of retro furniture, for added style. The communal kitchen is large and always…$Norrmalm - Hotel
Clarion Sign Hotel
This is a big, hyper-modern design hotel within walking distance of the Central Station and the Arlanda Express airport train. It opened in 2008, filling in the empty space between the train tracks and Norra Bantorget, and is Stockholm's largest lodging with 558 rooms. Its sign may…$$Norrmalm - Hotel
Ett Hem
Built as a private residence in 1910, the Lärkstan manor house still feels like a home. And that's the point. London designer Ilse Crawford has succeeded in making the interiors feel eerily lifelike, though part of the appeal here is that Ett Hem approaches design perfection in a way…$$$Östermalm - Hotel
Grand Hôtel
Simply the swankiest place in town to spend the night since 1874. This is where most superstars and world leaders stay when they come to Stockholm, plus practically every Nobel Prize winner since they started handing out the awards in 1901. And many more come for events at the…$$$City/Östermalm - Hotel
Hellstens Malmgård
This three-star manor, with the feeling of a countryside B&B, is the latest addition to Per Hellsten's hotel mini-empire (see also the Hotel Hellsten). The house was built in 1770, so the rest of the charming Södermalm neighborhood has pretty much been built around it. The…$$Södermalm - Hotel
Hotel Birger Jarl
Though the Birger Jarl isn't as hot as it was when it launched in 2000, it's still the best place to stay in downtown Stockholm if you're a sucker for Scandinavian design. Many of the 271 rooms were individually crafted by local designers, both known and unknown, and the lobby…$$Östermalm - Hotel
Hotel Hellsten
Per Hellsten may not boast the biggest hotel collection in Stockholm, but he is certainly putting together an intriguing one. This is his namesake, tucked into a 19th century building on a sleepy street parallel to Sveavägen. The mood and décor is less icy Scandinavian and more…$$Norrmalm - Hotel
Hotel Rival
Who knows what they were thinking in the 1930s, but apparently somebody on Södermalm reckoned that a combination hotel, movie house, restaurant, patisserie, and apartment complex would be a money-maker. Today, that odd mix is known for being owned by Benny Andersson, of ABBA fame.…$$Södermalm - Hotel
Långholmen
This former prison morphed into a combined hotel and hostel when the inmates were moved elsewhere in 1975. (The complex was the site of the last execution in Sweden in 1910.) Hjalmar Branting, Sweden's first working-class prime minister, spent three months behind bars here in 1889…$Södermalm - Hotel
Miss Clara
Until a 2006 congestion tax was introduced, the arrow-straight thoroughfare of Sveavägen was often a slow-moving parking lot. Today, not only are the cars moving but the thoroughfare has become a vibrant one for pedestrians, filled with some of the city's most cutting-edge stores and…$$City/Norrmalm - Hotel
Nobis Hotel
Come for the lounge, stay for the...lounge. Seriously, you could spend an entire afternoon in one of the four "living rooms" here. Its 90 feet of ceiling height is what people talked about when this five-star hotel opened in 2010, and it still pulls in crowds, as do the snacks and…$$$City/Östermalm - Hotel
Nordic C Hotel
For those of you who can't make it up to the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi, the Ice Bar at this hotel is the next best thing. It's especially lovely on a hot summer day (yes, Sweden does get a few). Nordic C used to be the "Nordic Sea" and it has a sister hotel, Nordic Light, across the…$$City/Norrmalm - Hotel
Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel
Lots of naysayers moaned when Radisson Blu's "monstrosity" started going up in 2010, with its stainless steel, undulating piping blocking some views of the iconic City Hall.Others applauded the arrival of a cool modern building in a city with too many depressing shoebox houses. I'm…$$City/Norrmalm - Hotel
Stallmästaregården
Anybody who doesn't need to be in the city center should stay at this inn. A "stable-master's homestead", it lies on a rare seaside lot at the southern tip of Royal Haga Park. The park is one of Stockholm's nicest to walk or jog in, and Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel live…$$Haga Södra/Norrtull - Hotel
Yasuragi Hasseludden
Okay, so it might be culturally confusing to stay at a Japanese spa when you've come all the way to Sweden. But take it as an opportunity to see the Stockholm archipelago and to relax, an activity this place does better than any other. You do that by never donning real clothes; most…$$Archipelago
