Esplanade Hotel ReviewThis informal hotel, where the only meal served is breakfast, lies immediately adjacent to the more expensive and more richly accessorized Diplomat. Respectable and discreet, it attracts representatives from the neighboring embassies and others who like its comfortable charm and traditional atmosphere. Constructed as part of the same beaux-arts architectural complex -- at the time, a boarding house -- as the Diplomat in 1910, it was transformed into a hotel in 1954, occupying two floors of a six-story building, the remainder of which are devoted to offices. Many of the rooms are furnished in old-fashioned style. Single rooms are minuscule. Most doubles have double-glazed windows, extra-long beds, and well-kept, decent-size tile bathrooms. Four rooms open onto a view of the water, and the high-ceilinged lounge features a balcony with a view of Djurgården. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
