Lord Nelson Hotel

Set astride the most congested street of Gamla Stan, "the narrowest hotel in Sweden" is the less expensive and slightly more claustrophobic clone of the somewhat more plush and better accessorized Lady Hamilton and Victory Hotels, two also-recommended nearby hotels which are members of the same chain. You'll get the same intensity of nautical charm, the same plethora of varnished mahogany, and the same polished brass and copper here, though. You'll also discover a higher-than-usual percentage of cabin-size single rooms, as the hotel caters to business travelers. "Cabins" are genuinely tiny -- the kind a merchant marine might feel completely at home in -- but each is charmingly macho, with expensively crafted mahogany trim and/or paneling and a sense of shipshape efficiency. Don't even think of checking in here if you travel with steamer trunks and a ton of paraphernalia -- you simply won't fit into your room. But if you do opt for this place, know in advance that you'll be in the heart of the Old City, close to everything, and you can while away some very happy time on the rooftop terrace (they call it "the poop deck"), high above the grimy rooftops of Old Stockholm.
