The Most Unusual Experiences

  • Climb to the Roof of Africa: Reaching the top of Africa's tallest mountain, Kilimanjaro, is a highly attainable dream for thousands of visitors each year, and the majority make it to the top to see dawn breaking over the snow-capped peaks. If you're up to the challenge, it's a perfect add-on to an East African safari.

  • Watch the Wildebeest Migration: One of the world's most spectacular movements of wildlife happens when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and their zebra friends move through the Serengeti and Kenya's neighboring Masai Mara Game Reserve on an annual migration following the rains and new grazing. The predators follow them, and during the birthing seasons there are easy pickings to be had. See the greatest density of animals in the Serengeti from June to November.

  • Track Chimps on Lake Tanganyika: Although isolated and difficult to get to, Lake Tanganyika on the western border of the country is home to two national parks that offer a different safari experience to the adventurous traveler. Mahale Mountains National Park and Gombe Stream National Park are home to dense and established forests that harbor chimpanzees and other primates, and in both is the opportunity to track them as they swing through the canopy of trees.

  • Dive in the Indian Ocean: With warm temperatures, clear waters, and a myriad of interesting marine life, Tanzania and Zanzibar's coasts are ideal for scuba diving. The long fringing coral reefs attract thousands of tropical reef fish, lobsters, turtles, and rays, and the deep Pemba Channel is home to large fish like barracuda, tuna, and shark.

  • Balloon Over the Serengeti: One of the top things to do in Tanzania is hot-air ballooning at dawn over the Serengeti National Park -- especially during the wildebeest migration. Apart from the hiss of the burners, the flight is magically silent, and there are magnificent views over the smooth, golden, grassy plains and purple hills.

  • Spice Tour: Zanzibar is also known as the Spice Island, and for centuries spices were one of the main commodities for trade. You can take a half-day tour of the spice plantations in the island's interior, smelling and tasting a variety of spices and tropical fruits such as cardamom, cloves, lemongrass, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, jackfruit, breadfruit, and coconuts. Most tours include lunch and a refreshing swim in the ocean.
