One of a handful of oceanside resorts that has preserved the classic New England vacation experience, this mammoth white Georgian Revival (1914) lords over the ocean and the mouth of the Kennebunk River. All rooms in the three-story main inn have been renovated over the last 3 years (still no air-conditioning or TVs in most rooms). They're bright and cheery, simply furnished with summer cottage antiques. Rooms in two of the three outbuildings carry over the rustic elegance of the main hotel; the exception is the East House, a 1950s-era hotel at the back of the property with 20 motel-style rooms that are uninspiring but do have televisions. A staff naturalist leads guided coastal ecology tours on Saturdays in July and August; Fridays feature a lobster buffet dinner. The shuffleboard court, putting green, and heated saltwater pool are also popular diversions.
